Dolphins are known for their playful behavior and agility. It's believed that dolphins swim by ships to conserve energy. This is called bow-riding. Dolphins have a behavior called breach, it's when they jump from the water into the air and then landing on their sides or their back. Dolphins maintain their dominance in the water by biting, smacking their tails on the water, and chasing. Dolphins also have a very good sense of touch. they communicate with their travel partners.
Dolphins must breathe in air and maintain a high body temp of about 98°. They need to conserve the heat for the colder water they venture into. They also have a thick layer of fat, just under the skin that helps to keep them warm. Dolphins only have one nostril, also known as a “blowhole”. From 1959 to 1972 dolphins were hunted for the oil inside their head, which was used to make delicate watch mechanisms. Less expensive oil has now been found from other sources, as a result dolphins aren't being hunted for it. However, many dolphins get trapped and drown in tuna nets.
